Chapter 6

Aftermath and Alliances

T he hours following their intervention in Cargo Bay 3 were tense. Nathan returned to his quarters, acutely aware that Captain Blackwood would be furious about the disruption and the loss of valuable “merchandise.” He half-expected an immediate summons, but none came. Instead, an eerie quiet settled over the ship—the calm before the storm.

He met with Valeria again in Marina’s quarters just before dawn. The rescued captives, Zephyr and Ember, were resting comfortably in the concealed water realm pocket Marina had created—a space shielded from both conventional and magical detection. Laurel, the forest nymph rescued earlier, had joined them, finding comfort in shared experience.

“The captain has initiated a Level 3 security sweep,” Valeria reported, her expression grim. “Deck-by-deck searches, focusing on unauthorized personnel and energy signatures. They haven’t found anything yet, but it’s only a matter of time before they intensify their efforts.”

“He knows someone intervened,” Nathan concluded. “Even if he doesn’t know who.”

“Precisely.” Valeria activated her holographic projector, displaying the data captured during the cargo bay surveillance. “But we have what we need. Clear recordings of the void realm Councilor confirming the trafficking operation, the captain’s involvement, and the transfer plans to the Celestial Empress.”

Nerissa, who had been analyzing the energy patterns, joined them. “The void signatures from the cargo bay match those detected near the captain’s private quarters and the void realm Councilor’s office. It confirms a direct link between them and the dimensional technology.”

“Enough evidence to approach Councilor Nereia?” Nathan asked.

Valeria nodded. “More than enough. The question is how to approach her securely. The captain likely has surveillance on all Council communications.”

“I can arrange a private meeting,” Marina offered. “Councilor Nereia often visits my quarters for consultations on water realm matters. It wouldn’t arouse suspicion.”

“Excellent,” Valeria agreed. “Arrange it for this afternoon, if possible. Time is critical.”

As Marina left to make the arrangements, Nathan turned back to Valeria. “What about the captain? He expects me for my monitoring shift tonight.”

“You go,” Valeria decided. “Maintain your cover. Report minor energy fluctuations, nothing significant. We need him to believe you’re still under his control.”

“It feels wrong, deceiving him while planning to expose him.”

“It’s necessary,” Valeria countered firmly. “This isn’t about personal feelings; it’s about dismantling a network that destroys lives. Tactical deception is a required tool.”

Nathan nodded, accepting the harsh reality of their situation. “What about the shadow walker? Shade? Any sign of them?”

Valeria shook her head. “No. They likely escaped the ship during the initial chaos. Shadow walkers are notoriously difficult to track, even for shadow realm agents.”

“So we focus on the evidence we have and securing Councilor Nereia’s support.”

“Exactly.” Valeria packed away her equipment. “I need to finalize my report for STID headquarters. Contact me immediately after your meeting with Councilor Nereia.”

“Will do.” Nathan watched her prepare to leave, struck again by her focused intensity. “Valeria?”

She paused, turning back to him. “Yes?”

“Last night... you took a significant risk intervening. It went against your usual protocol.”

Valeria’s expression remained carefully neutral. “Tactical situations require adaptable responses.”

“Was it just tactical?” Nathan pressed gently.
